Former Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Yahaya Bello, CON, received members of the Kogi State House of Assembly with a message focused on legacy, unity, and political responsibility.
At the meeting, Bello began by congratulating all aspirants who had obtained their expression of interest and nomination forms, reminding them that politics is transient and that every leader will one day leave the stage.
According to him, what endures is not the position held, but the legacy built and the impact made on the people.
He noted that many others are equally qualified to serve, but political realities often require compromise and patience. He urged the aspirants to remain conscious of the sacrifices made by others who stepped aside to create opportunities for them, stressing that such gestures should be respected and honored.
He also made it clear that no one should have paid money to secure endorsement, directing anyone who may have been asked to do so to demand a refund.
The former governor further advised the aspirants to return to their constituencies to reconcile with all stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of unity, inclusiveness, and grassroots engagement in securing electoral victory.
He expressed confidence in their chances at the polls, adding that their success should not only be achieved but sustained through dedication and service.
Bello concluded by stating that he wishes to be remembered as a “promise keeper,” one who keeps his word except in situations where doing so becomes extremely difficult out of control.
Earlier, the Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Umar Aliyu highlighted the achievements of the Assembly, noting that the foundation of unity and cooperation laid during Bello’s administration has been sustained and strengthened under his successor, His Excellency Ahmed Usman Ododo.
Rt. Hon. Umar commended Bello for the trust and confidence he reposed in the Assembly, stating that such support contributed significantly to their effectiveness.
He offered prayers for the former governor’s continued good health and wellbeing, while reaffirming the Assembly’s loyalty to both Bello and the current administration. He also pledged the lawmakers’ commitment to supporting Governor Ododo’s policies and development agenda.
The Speaker further disclosed that while the Assembly had 25 members during Bello’s tenure, previously suppressed constituencies have now been formally recognized, increasing the number of seats in the Kogi State House of Assembly to 36 ahead of the next elections.
