Clarifying the Status of Demonstration Standard College, Onyukoko
The recent article titled “Education in Crisis: Demonstration Standard College, Onyukoko Calls for Urgent Government Intervention”, authored by Comrade Obejara Zubair, requires factual clarification. While public advocacy for education is welcome, such discussions must be grounded in verified information and balanced assessment.
Demonstration Standard College, Onyukoko, remains one of the leading secondary schools in Kogi Central and Kogi State. Its academic performance speaks clearly: in the most recent JAMB examination, 13 students scored above 300 marks, while over 60 students scored above 250 marks, amongst other academic achievements. All these reflect strong instructional quality and effective school management.
There is no official indication that the Kogi State Government has lost oversight of the school or that it is poorly managed. Consequently, calls for an urgent government takeover are premature and unsupported. The school continues to operate within established educational and regulatory frameworks.
The school’s high student population is a direct result of its academic reputation and should be seen as an opportunity for strategic support, including expanded classrooms, improved facilities, and additional teaching staff.
Claims suggesting insecurity are also misleading, as the school benefits from existing community and vigilante security presence. While safety should always be reviewed, assessments must reflect on-ground realities.
The management and teaching staff deserve commendation for sustaining excellence under challenging conditions. Education is a shared responsibility, and progress is best achieved through constructive engagement, factual reporting, and supportive interventions. Efforts should focus on strengthening an institution that is already delivering strong results for its students and the wider community.
